Low Water Pressure in Shepherd's Bush, London
A weak shower can be Thames Water's problem, your building's problem or your own pipe's problem, and the fix is different each time. [The Honest Plumber Shepherds Bush](/) takes calls on 07886 073115 at any hour and sends an independently owned partner company to work out which it is, because paying for a pump when the street main is the fault is money wasted.
Start with the one number that decides who pays. Thames Water's minimum is 1 bar at the boundary stop tap, and if mains pressure falls below that, it must investigate at no cost to you. A plumber can measure your pressure with a gauge in a few minutes, and if it is below the line, the repair is theirs, not yours.
If the pressure at the boundary is fine, the loss is inside your property. Published London figures put a pressure reducing valve replacement at £80 to £150, a shower pump at £120 to £400, a whole-property booster at £400 to £800 and a softener to deal with limescale restriction at £500 to £1,200. The right answer is usually the cheapest on that list.
The Bush has several reasons for feeble flow. Victorian conversions often have old lead or early copper supply pipes that have narrowed with scale, tall blocks and the four 20-storey towers built in 1974 lose pressure with height, and new apartments at Television Centre and White City Place run pressurised systems whose controls fail in their own way.
Hard water adds to it. Thames Water's published London reference of 266 mg/l of calcium carbonate means scale gradually narrows pipes, clogs aerators and chokes a combi's heat exchanger, so the weak shower may be a blocked part rather than a weak supply.

Where the Pressure Goes
Work from the street inwards, because the cause sits in one of three places.

The Street Main and Your Stop Tap
If a pressure gauge on the outside tap reads under 1 bar, the loss is on Thames Water's side and the investigation is free. A half-closed stop tap or a partially shut stopcock at the boundary is a common cheap cause, and we check it before suggesting any equipment.

Your Own Pipework and Valves
Old lead or early copper supply pipes, a failing pressure reducing valve and a half-closed isolating valve each starve a tap. A reducing valve replacement is published at £80 to £150, and the partner company traces the loss from the stopcock outwards instead of guessing.

Limescale and Fixtures
Hard water scales shower heads, aerators and mixer cartridges, so the supply can be fine and the outlet choked. Descaling or replacing the part is cheap. A whole-house softener, published at £500 to £1,200, is a bigger decision, and we would only suggest it where scale is the proven cause.
What's In It for You
How the Diagnosis Runs
A gauge reading is worth more than an opinion.
Measure First
A pressure gauge on the outside tap tells you the mains reading, and a flow test shows the volume. Both are needed because pressure and flow are different problems.
Trace and Isolate
The partner company checks the stopcock, the reducing valve, the filters and each outlet in turn, noting where the reading falls.
Price the Cheapest Fix
You get a written quote for the proportionate fix, and if the street main is at fault, we say so and tell you how to report it.
Handy to Know
Quick Tests You Can Try
These cost nothing and narrow the search.
Tests to Run
A couple of minutes at the taps tells you a lot.
- Is the kitchen cold tap strong while the hot is weak?
- Does every tap suffer, or only the shower?
- Is it worse at 6pm than at 3am?
- Is the stopcock fully open?
- Do neighbours report the same?
What the Answers Mean
Match the pattern to the likely cause.
- Weak everywhere: boundary or stopcock
- Weak hot only: cylinder, combi or scaled heat exchanger
- Weak at one outlet: a scaled head or cartridge
- Worse in the evening: a street demand peak
- Weak since work was done: a valve left partly closed
What You Can Expect
Pressure Problems Across W12, W6 and W3
The building matters more than the postcode.
Towers and Top Floors
Height costs pressure. The 1974 towers near the Green and upper floors of mansion-style conversions often need a booster or a tank, and a landlord may have to be involved.
Combi Boilers in Flats
A combi needs a minimum flow to fire, and a scaled inlet filter or heat exchanger can mimic low pressure. A service often cures what looks like a supply fault.
New Apartments
Television Centre and White City Place use pressurised and communal systems. If the shower is weak, the cause may sit with the managing agent's plant, not your tap.
A weak flow is often a symptom of something else, so also read leak detection & repair if the loss is steady, and central heating repair if only the hot side is affected. The streets near us are covered on our Hammersmith page, and the full list sits on the services page.
Pressure, Flow and Why They Differ
Pressure is the force in the pipe, measured in bar, while flow is the volume that actually comes out of the tap. A pipe that has narrowed with scale can show healthy pressure at the stopcock and still deliver a dribble, which is why a single reading never settles the question.
What the Work Is Built To
Supply Regulations
Fittings on the supply side follow the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, which expect WRAS-approved valves and parts, and pipework follows BS EN 806. Any unvented cylinder falls under Building Regulations Part G3.
When It Is a Leak
A steady fall in pressure with no change in use can be a leak on the supply. Check your water meter with everything off, and if it still moves, close the stopcock and ring us. If you smell gas at any time, leave the property and ring 0800 111 999.
What We Will Not Do
We will not sell you a pump to hide a fault on the street, and we will not suggest a softener without evidence that scale is the problem. If the gauge says the mains reading is under 1 bar, the honest advice is to report it to Thames Water, and we will say so even though it means no job for the partner company.
Parking and Access
Check the controlled parking zone on your street before the visit, particularly around the Green, Uxbridge Road and the streets near Loftus Road on match days. If you live in a block, tell the partner company how to reach the stopcock and the plant room, since the pressure fault may sit in a shared cupboard rather than your flat.
Reporting It Properly
If the gauge shows a mains problem, give Thames Water the date, the time of day, the gauge reading and the addresses of neighbours who are affected. A dated record is much harder to brush aside than a phone call saying the shower is weak, and it is free to produce.
Good Questions
How much does fixing low water pressure cost in Shepherd's Bush?
It depends on the cause. Published London figures give a pressure reducing valve replacement at £80 to £150, a shower pump at £120 to £400, a whole-property booster at £400 to £800 and a whole-house softener at £500 to £1,200. If the fault is on Thames Water's side, the investigation is free. The partner company quotes in writing after measuring the pressure.
What is the minimum water pressure Thames Water must provide?
Thames Water's published minimum is 1 bar at the boundary stop tap. If mains pressure falls below that, it must investigate at no cost to you. A plumber can check with a gauge on the outside tap. If you are below 1 bar, report it to Thames Water, and if you are above it, the cause is inside your property.
Why is my shower weak but the kitchen tap fine?
That points at the shower or its pipework rather than the supply. A scaled shower head, a clogged cartridge or a partly closed isolating valve are the usual reasons, and hard water makes scale likely. If the shower is electric or mixer-fed, the cause may be a thermostatic cartridge. The partner company can test each in turn.
Could limescale be causing my low pressure?
Yes. Thames Water's London reference figure is 266 mg/l of calcium carbonate, which is hard, and scale accumulates in aerators, shower heads, valves and heat exchangers. A descale or a replacement part is cheap, and often fixes the complaint on the day. A whole-house softener is a bigger step and should follow a proper diagnosis, not a hunch.
Why is my hot water weaker than my cold?
Cold water comes from the mains, while hot water passes through a combi's heat exchanger or a cylinder. Scale or a blocked filter in the combi can restrict hot water, and a cylinder on a tank-fed system gives low pressure by design. The fix depends on the system. See our boiler servicing page if scale in the boiler is suspected.
Can a pump fix low water pressure?
Sometimes, but not always. A pump boosts flow inside your property and cannot make up for a weak street main, and some pumps are not allowed on a direct mains supply. A shower pump for a tank-fed system is published at £120 to £400, and a whole-property booster at £400 to £800. Get the cause confirmed before buying one.
Is low pressure worse at certain times?
Often, yes. When many homes draw water at the same time in the early evening and morning, the street main can dip. If your pressure is fine at 3am and poor at 6pm, the cause is probably demand on the network. Note the times and gauge readings and report it to Thames Water, as that evidence helps them.
Does low pressure affect my combi boiler?
A combi needs a minimum flow rate to fire, so weak mains can stop the burner igniting or make hot water run lukewarm. A scaled inlet filter or heat exchanger can create the same symptoms with a healthy supply. Check which it is before changing the boiler, and see emergency boiler repair if the boiler is shutting off.
I live in a tower block or on a high floor. Is that the problem?
Height reduces pressure, so top floors in tall blocks often see lower flow. Many such buildings rely on a shared tank and booster set that the managing agent looks after, so the first call may be to them. The partner company can measure your pressure at the tap and tell you whether the fault is in the flat or in the building.
What is a pressure reducing valve and can it fail?
A pressure reducing valve limits the pressure entering a property so fittings are not stressed. When the diaphragm fails or the valve is set too low, taps run weak. A replacement is published at £80 to £150 in London. It is a small job, and often the cheapest answer once the gauge shows pressure is fine before the valve and poor after it.
Who do I tell if the problem is the water main?
Thames Water, on its customer line or website. Give the time pattern and any gauge reading, and say whether neighbours are affected. If you want to know first, ring us and the partner company can measure it. We cannot fix the main ourselves, but the partner company can tell you with a gauge reading whether it is the main, which saves you arguing the point.
